ALAKANUK -- An Alakanuk man was charged with manslaughter after he drove his ATV into a 3-year-old relative Tuesday night, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Clyde Stern, 40, was driving his ATV near the village water plant around 8:30 p.m. on his way to buy cigarettes at the village store when he collided with Teron Patrick, 3, killing the boy, according to trooper Neal Fulks.

The boy was playing on his bike with other children in the shoulder of the road, not uncommon in the village, Fulks said.

The man was driving above the 15 mph speed limit but Fulks said troopers were still investigating how fast he was going.

Stern was the boy's distant cousin but considered himself a grandfatherly figure to him, Fulks said. Stern tried to swerve to avoid the boy.

Stern had been drinking before the accident and appeared intoxicated at the time, according to witnesses who spoke to troopers.

The investigation continues and Stern may face additional charges, Fulks said.
