DENALI NATIONAL PARK-- A 48-year-old California man has died of an apparent heart
attack during a ranger-led hike in Denali National Park.

Park spokeswoman Kris Fister identified the victim as 48-year-old James Brown of
Coto de Caza, Calif. The death occurred Wednesday on a hike near the Teklanika River.

Fister says in a statement that resuscitation efforts by fellow hikers and rangers
were not successful. Neither were advanced cardiac life support measures by ranger-medics
who arrived at the scene by helicopter.

Fister says Brown's wife also was on the hike. The body was released to a Fairbanks
mortuary after consultation with the state medical examiner's office.
