Climber killed in
fall

A Fort Richardson
soldier was killed over the weekend when he fell from Ptarmigan Peak in Chugach
State Park. Fort Richardson officials identified the climber as Greg A.
Coan, 23, of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Alaska State Troopers said Coan had
been climbing with two companions and was on his way down the mountain when be
lost his footing and fell about 300 feet shortly before midnight Saturday.
His companions hiked out and notified troopers. Coan was a supply
specialist assigned to Company D, 706th Support Battalion. He had been
stationed In Alaska since 1992. A rescue team from the Alaska Mountain
Rescue Group, state troopers and Chugach State Park recovered Coan's body at
about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Troopers said Coan suffered severe head
injuries
