A Fort Richardson soldier killed Saturday when he fell from a cliff near the power project dam at Eklutna Lake has been identified as Spec. 4 Sylvester Romel.

Romel, who would have been 21 years old on Tuesday, lived with his wife, Julie, at 4119 Mountain View Drive, according to the information office at Ft. Richardson

The couple does not have any children.  Romel came to Alaska March 30, 1967 from Michigan where his parents live.  He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 69th General Support Group.

Romel fell to his death while on a pleasure hike near the dam, located off the Glenn Highway about 33 miles northeast of Anchorage.

An Army mountain rescue team recovered his body shortly after midnight Saturday evening at the bottom of a canyon some 400 feet below the cliff from which he fell, reported a spokesman for the information office.

Romel's funeral will be held in Detroit, Mich.
