Ft. Rich Soldier Dies on Glacier

A 20-year-old soldier stationed at Ft. Richardson was killed Wednesday night when he fell during an off-duty hike near the mountain-climbing training grounds at Eklutna Glacier.

The name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

According to authorities at Ft. Richardson, the soldier died following a fall above the 5,500 foot elevation of the mountain about 1-1/2 miles from the training camp.

He was with two companions, and all three men were from Company "C", 5th Battalion, 23rd infantry, of the 172nd Infantry Brigade.

Official sources said the three left camp for an off-duty hike after completing a day's training at the camp.  The accident is being investigated by military authorities.

Ronnie D. Snyder, 21, Fort Worth, was killed Wednesday when he fell from Eklutna Glacier near here while on an off-duty hike with two other soldiers, Army officials said.
