Two canoeists die on river near Hyder

Two people drowned after their canoe capsized in Southeast Alaska, the Alaska State Troopers said Tuesday. Steven J. Toepke, 27, of Hyder and Candace D. Grant, 23, of Canada capsized their canoe in Salmon River near Hyder sometime early Friday, troopers said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia launched a search Friday when the two were reported missing. A Canadian Coast Guard helicopter spotted the bodies in Portland Canal. The Canadian police notified troopers Friday evening.
